Spear Creek September 2025

Neil and Yvonne, Gordon and Joy, Malcolm and Allison, Darren and Kylie, Greg and Maria, Brett and Lorraine, Robin and Lynne, Kev and Dot all in caravans, Dave in a tent, Gloria and Steve in a vintage van and Mark and Annette took a cabin making 11 vehicles and 21 people meeting at Spear Ck...in the Motorhome camp site at the base of the gully.

Evening beers and cheers around the campfire. However, the wind got up and roared down the gully making the night very uncomfortable for every one. Dave suffered damage to his tent so decided to call it quits, as did Neil and Yvonne’s friend's on Saturday as the wind was persisting and the forecast was it would be worse than Friday.

A drive into Port Augusta looking for a replacement spare for the Puckridge caravan after a spectacular tyre shredding, resulted in nothing being open.

Neil then lead the group to do the North Track on the property, no mud map and surprisingly didn’t get lost!! Some little challenges in parts. The weather continued to be crappy, plenty of cloud which blocked the vista, but it was a very pleasant hour drive.

Back to camp for lunch then set off to do the southern track. It was quite short with spectacular views out to the Gulf, which unfortunately was hampered by the increasing wind causing thick dust over the plains. The cost to do the tracks was $30.00 per car.

Magically at 4sies, appeared Maria’s delicious bruschetta, followed by Maria’s cheese cake and Lorraine’s vanilla slice, very nice and thank you to them both.

Another nice campfire on Saturday night, however the wind got up again and this time it was horrendous. Felt like 100 plus kph. The noise of the wind going through the gums together with the banging and crashing around the caravans caused most to have a stressful night and little sleep.

The wind stopped just after 3:00am and the rain and lightning began and persisted till dawn.

Sunday, Fathers day, we saw the weather improve to a bright sunny day.

Malcolm and Allison, Brett and Lorraine, Yvonne and Neil headed back to Adelaide, while Gordon and Joy lead the remaining group on a drive to the Jakka Brothers Brewery in Melrose.

The brewery was buzzing as we settled into Craft beers, wood fired pizza and live music. It was very pleasant sitting in the sun watching the passing parade.

On return to camp Gordon got the fire going and we gathered to further enjoy each others company.

It was a breathless evening with a magnificent moon over looking the camp.

Everyone got a pleasant nights sleep and rose to another sunny day to pack up and head home.

Very enjoyable weekend was had by all. Thanks to Neil and Yvonne our fearless trip leaders
