What absolute cracker of a day!
The weather couldn’t have been better- blue skies a light breeze and that perfect kind of sunshine that makes you grateful to be out exploring.
Our crew for the day consisted of 8 cars - Chris, Barry, Brendan, Brett n Lorraine, Greg n Maria, Andy, and Guests Justin and David.
We rolled up around 10.15 to see all bar 1-2 cars there, we paid our fees dropped the tyres and were ready to roll around 10.50.
Greg n Brett pulled their van leaving them at bottom of track as planned on staying at Currawong corner just further up the road afterwards with Chris and spouses of course,
a great decision, as it turned out to be a good spot with all the usual campfire comforts later that night.
Chris took the lead for the trip with Greg as our trusty tail- end Charlie.
Hitting the tracks - we started off on the “old miners track” weaving past the remains of old gold and copper mines, there was even an old, covered shaft. The track was nice and quiet,
and the scenery made it hard to keep your eyes on the tracks at times (but we did!)
Next up was “Winding Way track” - Brendan, with Lorraine as passenger took the easier option since his rig hasn’t had its upgrade yet.
Andy, however, accidentally found himself on the wrong line and ended up battling a rocky section, with a bit of help from Barry n Chris- and after a couple of wheel spins and the smell of burnt rubber He made it through like a champ.
Then we headed for “MAXXIS track” which offered a choice between easy and hard lines, Chris pointed out the bailout spot, which again Brendan wisely took, the rest of us tackled the harder section. Narrow. Rocky and windy, exactly the sort of driving that makes 4WDers grin. At the end of that section sat the “Mud pit”, which looked mighty tempting, until Justin poked around with his aerial and discovered a few Soft spots and some serious depth, with recovery costing $100 a pop, everyone agreed it was better to live to drive another day.
From there, it was on to “Rocky Point” track, which lived up to its name with plenty of loose rocks on the decent. We stopped for lunch and toilet break- great timing to enjoy a rest and soak up the sunshine.
A little further up, a lookout offered stunning views over the ranges, the kind that make you stop, breathe, and just take it all in.
The “Dobinson’s Descent” came next – definitely one of those “walk it first pick your line carefully” type of tracks, Chris n Barry led the way, followed by Justin all easing through without any trouble. Brendan stuck to the easier tracks while the rest of us took on the steeper descents, I (Maria) had my turn behind the wheel on a few of the rocky sections, with Barry out front giving hand signals, and my co pilot calling the shots,
A bit of teamwork, a deep breath, and we were through! We’ve got this!
Back to the entrance around 3pm, tyres inflated, few yarns about the day and farewells to those that only came for the day,
After a great day on the tracks, Chris, Brett n Lorraine ,Greg n Maria made their way to Currawong Corner CP, only to be greeted by a padlocked gate. Chris quickly realised Neil hadn’t possibly passed on the code as he scrolled through text messages - And of course, neither Yvonne or Neil answered their phones, after a bit of detective work and some persistence from Brett, as Chris who had a number that didn’t connect, we finally got hold of a phone number (good ole google), the gentleman who answered was also called Neil, well he didn’t know we were coming as it hadn’t been confirmed, all good he drove down to let us in.
Once the formalities were sorted, including the rule that every fire pit must have a 10L bucket of water beside it- we set up camp parked in a circle.
The fire was soon crackling, the air was cooler, and we settled in for another great night of laughs, yarns, snacks, and few too many beverages, the galahs were noisy at first but by 7.30 the night turned still and peaceful, perfect way to end the week.
To wrap up Sunday, Chris headed off, while the rest of us took our time packing up, we managed to get everything stowed away just as the rain clouds rolled in, before that, we even squeezed in a bit of sunshine with the awnings out-
All in all, it was another fantastic Breakaways weekend- plenty of laughs, great teamwork, and no major dramas. thanks, Chris for leading another great run!
